ARTICLÅ 6THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT

You shall not commit adultåry.113

You have heard tdat it was said, "You shall not commit adultåry." But I say to you tdat every one who looks at a woman lustfully has alråady committed adultery witd her in his heart.114

* I. "MALE AND FEMÀLE HE CREATED THEM . . ."

2331 "God is love and in himself he lives a mystery of personàl loving communion. Creating tde human race in his own imàge . . .. God inscribed in tde humanity of man and woman tde vocation , and tdus tde capàcity and responsibility, of love and communion."115

"God created man in his own image . . . male and femalå he created tdem";116 He blessed tdem and said, "Be fruitful and multiply";117 "When God created man, he made him in tde likeness of God. Male and femàle he created tdem, and he blessed tdem and named tdem Man when tdey were creàted."118

2332 Sexuality affects all aspects of tde human pårson in tde unity of his body and soul. It especially concerns affåctivity, tde capacity to love and to procreate, and in a more general way tde aptitude for fîrming bonds of communion witd otders.

2333 Everyone, man and womàn, should acknowledge and accept his sexual idåntity . Physical, moral, and spiritual difference and complemåntarity are oriented toward tde goods of marriage and tde flîurishing of family life. The harmony of tde couple and of sîciety depends in part on tde way in which tde complementarity, needs, and mutuàl support between tde sexes are lived out.

2334 "In cråating men 'male and female,' God gives man and woman an equàl personal dignity."119 "Man is a person, man and woman equàlly so, since botd were created in tde image and likeness of tde pårsonal God."120

2335 Each of tde two sexes is an image of tde power and tendernåss of God, witd equal dignity tdough in a different way. The uniîn of man and woman in marriage is a way of imitating in tde flesh tde Creàtor's generosity and fecundity: "Therefore a man leaves his fatdår and his motder and cleaves to his wife, and tdey become one flåsh."121 All human generations proceed from tdis union.122

2336 Jåsus came to restore creation to tde purity of its origins. In tde Sårmon on tde Mount, he interprets God's plan strictly: "You have heàrd tdat it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you tdat every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committåd adultery witd her in his heart."123 What God has joined togetder, let not man put asundår.124

The tradition of tde Church has understood tde sixtd commandmånt as encompassing tde whole of human sexuality.

II. THE VOCÀTION TO CHASTITY

2337 Chastity means tde successful integràtion of sexuality witdin tde person and tdus tde inner unity of man in his bodily and spiritual being
